A Strange Experience for a Generation X

Today I participated in a virtual event with my 9 year old son. It was a surreal experience.

It was an awards ceremony like the Academy Awards but for video games. I don't really like video games, I never played them, not even when I was young. But I realized that they play a very important role in my son's life and I want to share this experience with him. In addition, it is a plus for my teaching task. So, in the Summer, I created an avatar of my own and whenever there is an important "event" online (as he calls it), I go with him with my new avatar :).
I always feel like an alien, but his laugh and the joy of sharing it with me outweigh the awkwardness I feel. I also hope this strange experience turns into happy memories in the future. (Spoiler alert: PIGGY won the award for best game of the year.)

Here are some snapshots for posterity.

  1. It’s quite amazing what can happen online these days. Like you, I’m not a gamer. I remember “pong” from when I was in high school, and I played Nintendo w/ you kids back in the 1990s. It’s good you were able to attend the ceremony. Now I’m curious about “Piggy”!
