Today I participated in a virtual event with my 9 year old son. It was a surreal experience.
It was an awards ceremony like the Academy Awards but for video games. I don't really like video games, I never played them, not even when I was young. But I realized that they play a very important role in my son's life and I want to share this experience with him. In addition, it is a plus for my teaching task. So, in the Summer, I created an avatar of my own and whenever there is an important "event" online (as he calls it), I go with him with my new avatar :).
I always feel like an alien, but his laugh and the joy of sharing it with me outweigh the awkwardness I feel. I also hope this strange experience turns into happy memories in the future. (Spoiler alert: PIGGY won the award for best game of the year.)
Here are some snapshots for posterity.
I´m a teaching professor and a literacy specialist in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

I didn’t know something such as this existed! I should check it out. I have no idea what is going on with video games but my 8 year old is very interested. I guess I better learn something about it.
It’s quite amazing what can happen online these days. Like you, I’m not a gamer. I remember “pong” from when I was in high school, and I played Nintendo w/ you kids back in the 1990s. It’s good you were able to attend the ceremony. Now I’m curious about “Piggy”!
Having a senior in HS in 2020 – everything was virtual in the spring, including Senior Awards and Graduation! It was weird, to say the least. He dealt with it better than I – of course! Sounds like you’re going with the flow! That’s great!

Your son is lucky to have you. As a fellow X’r, I sometimes struggle to realize that the world is so different today than when I was a teen.
